NORTH STAR FORUM

North Star forum is now live – http://northstar.boards.net/

This will hopefully continue the work of this blog in a more interactive way.

This blog continues for the moment, but may be phased out eventually.

Anyone registering as a forum member has to have their application approved (a measure to help weed out spammers before they start trying to sell us counterfeit handbgs, etc).

Approval time may vary, because it depends on me being online – in some cases it could be almost instantaneous, at others it may be a few hours.

Once approved, you should get an email with a link – you need to click that link to complete your registration.

The forum itself is pretty much self-explanatory, so I’ll let you look for yourself rather than list categories here.

Nothing is set in stone, though. Some categories may not prove to be of interest and will eventually be removed, while new category suggestions are welcome.

Well, hopefully this experiment will prove worthwhile. It’s not cost anything, except some of my time, and I’ve got quite a lot of that to spare at the moment.

Hope you enjoy it.

North Star Bulletin – 13 July 2015

Today’s posts round-up

As I’m moving operations over to the North Star forum, I shall from now on (excepting special circumstances) be posting a summary of daily posts with links instead of the posts themselves on this blog.

Readers can choose which ones, if any, they want to view, and it saves me time and extra work.

You can still repost stuff on your blog if desired, you’ll just have to cut & paste it. A link back to the forum would be nice.

You can also comment on most posts on the forum as a visitor. To start threads you need to sign up.

Scotswood community garden celebrates its 20th anniversary

A community garden which has provided a gateway to the natural world in an inner city area is celebrating its 20th birthday.

Scotswood Natural Community Garden in Whickham View in Newcastle’s West End covers two-and-a-half acres and has served as a vital green lung in the built-up area.

On Saturday (4th July 2015), the garden behind the John Marley Centre will hold a public day of celebration to mark the anniversary

The event from 11am – 2pm includes a performance from the orchestra of Hawthorn Primary School in Newcastle, cooking goodies in the garden’s bread oven, crafts activities and a talk by Ed Tyler, who designed the garden 20 years ago.

The garden charity is run by co-directors Harriet Menter and Karen Dobson.

It features wildflower meadows, ponds with great crested newts, birch woodland, sculpture trail and a heritage orchard of 60 trees.

It has just launched a food-growing project with grant backing from the Local Environmental Action Fund (LEAF), which is run by the Community Foundation of Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.

Demonstration plots encourage local people to grow their own produce and the garden hopes to sell some of its crops to restaurants to generate income.

Northern Rail workers vote to go on strike in row over jobs

Workers on Northern Rail have voted to go on strike in a row over jobs and safety.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union backed walkouts by 80% and other forms of industrial action by 90%.

The union said it is in dispute over a series of issues, including the removal of permanent posts and the creation of zero-hour jobs via a contract with a security company, cuts to booking offices and attacks on the role and responsibility of train guards.

The union said Northern Rail, which runs services which links Teesside with stations across the north of England, had also given no commitment that there will be no compulsory redundancies beyond the end of its current franchise in February 2016.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said:

RMT has made every effort to win assurances from Northern Rail over jobs, services and safety. However, the company continues to ride roughshod over our efforts.

“We therefore had no option but to ballot all staff for action to force the company to take these issues seriously and the members have now voted decisively for action. That mandate will now be considered by the union.”
